High Tech Components & Materials Industry
Overview
The high tech components & materials industry researches and develops cutting-edge component materials needed in sophisticated industries including the electronics, semiconductors, photonics, aerospace, and auto industries. Gwangju is equipped with such infrastructure as the High Tech Components & Materials Center and has done its best to become a southwest production base by taking advantage of a geography in which there is soaring demand for components and materials from companies including KIA Motors, Samsung Electronics, and Carrier.
Investment Environment and Support Measures
- Seeking for added-value in the leading industries of photonics, electronics, and automotives
- Promotion to produce components of both titanium and specialized alloys for medical and industrial purposes (from 2002 to 2007, 13.1 billion won): Supporting the development of promising technology
- LED/LD packaging test production base establishment (from 2003 to 2006, 18.7 billion won): Facilitating the commercialization of promising technologies
- Implementing a project to develop competitive components technology (from 2003 to 2008, 115 billion won)
- - High Brightness LED, Precision Motor, synthetic materials, LED lamp module, optical communications components
- Establishing extra-small controlled motors: creating added value and securing technological competitiveness through compact, precise controlled motors
Infrastructure
- Gwangju Research Center of the Korea Institute of Industrial Technology: High Tech Components & Materials Research Center
- - Playing a role as a key institute to nurture companies specializing in components and materials with technological development and aid
- - Supporting, evaluating and authorizing the production of prototype products for SMEs
- Gwangju Techno-park: playing an important role as a hub of innovative regional projects and middle-core services

- - Establishing infrastructure to provide innovation throughout the region, network among industry, academia, and research, transferring technology and creating business

- Establishing a R&D basis for new ultra-light materials and components (from 2005 to 2010, 26.4 billion won): support to develop technology related to AL and Mg and to enhance reliability
