New Energy Industry
Overview
With the depletion of fossil fuels including oil in sight, the world´s attention is focused on environmentally-friendly new energy industries such as hydrogen fuel cells, solar cells, and wind power.
Gwangju has the best natural surroundings where the amount of solar radiation that determines the efficiency of solar power is the greatest in the whole nation. Based on this, Gwangju has nurtured the solar power industry as a future industry by building plentiful infrastructure including a new energy industrial promotion center and solar power facilities.
Investment Environment and Measure to Support
- Enacting a provincial ordinance on solar energy for the first time in Korea (June, 2004)
- Applying for the brand "Solar City Gwangju"
- - Enhancing the image of a solar energy city and securing competitiveness (taking advantage as tourism resources)
- Fostering the industry with the cooperation of the Korea Electric Power Corporation and central government

- Building a solar energy city to establish a low energy consumption system: from 2002 to 2011 (193.9 billion won)
