 Gwangju Design Biennale

Design is the light that is shed on the human race, brightening the present as well as lighting a path to the future. Our surroundings are bathed in design's light in a warm, protective glow. Design is a living, breathing organism that connects man to his environment through light.
This light that is design, both illuminating and beautiful, allows people to find comfort in their surroundings. It allows people to maintain a harmonious equilibrium with their environment. It reveals the true nature of our surrounding culture and casts a beautiful light on everything around us.
In order to create this bright light of design, designers the world over strive endlessly through experimentation. This very drive and passion on the part of designers is a light in itself for the future and a strong force for change. The light created by designers is the light of design.
The theme of Gwangju Design Biennale 2007 is ¡°Light¡±. As the major theme of this year's Gwangju Design Biennale 2007, the implication is that design furnishes light for humanity, for the environment, and for the future as well. A fixture in the realm of economics, design has since become much more. It is infused within every recess of society and has infiltrated popular culture as well. Gwangju Design Biennale 2007's theme of ¡°Light¡± combines contemporary design with the perspective of basic design precepts in an effort to create the new and destroy the old all under the rubric of this light.
The main subject of Gwangju Design Biennale is ¡°Light¡±. The metaphor incorporates the brightness of Gwangju's future with the notion of design lighting the path for man's future. As ubiquitous as light, design has permeated the economy, every facet of society, as well as every genre of contemporary culture.
The importance of design is reflected as well in the vernacular of everyday people along with the corporate world. Design is a mixed language incorporating dialects from the commoner to the patois of those in commerce, society, and culture. Design has itself become a means of expression much like language, a function that is much discoursed upon in all spheres of life.
Design's role in the economy, society, and culture as well as the discovery of new developments in design is at the heart of this year's Gwangju Design Biennale 2007.
