Industry Overview
The photonics industry has been fostered in Gwangju with the support of the Central Government since 2000. A sophisticated infrastructure has developed the industry including 12 R&D institutes and organizations such as KAPID (Korea Association for Photonics Industry Development, www.kapid.org) and GJTP (Gwangju Techno Park, www.gjtp.or.kr). Some 179 companies and organizations related to photonics are now in operation, and 412 experts and 4,318 employees work in the development and manufacture of optical communication components, light sources, and optical precision devices.
Success Factor
Gwangju is looking to invest 18.6 million US$ in innovative technology development and commercialization technology from 2004 to 2007 with the backing of the Central Government. Over 50 components and materials companies have been expanding its business scale. Also, high tech parts and materials Pilot Plant will be formed within KITECH Gwangju research institute.
