Industry Overview
The photonics industry has been fostered in Gwangju with the support of the Central Government since 2000. A sophisticated infrastructure has developed the industry including 12 R&D institutes and organizations such as KAPID (Korea Association for Photonics Industry Development, www.kapid.org) and GJTP (Gwangju Techno Park, www.gjtp.or.kr). Some 179 companies and organizations related to photonics are now in operation, and 412 experts and 4,318 employees work in the development and manufacture of optical communication components, light sources, and optical precision devices.
Success Factor
The policy of industry development will continue, supported by a US$386.3-million budget to be spent between 2004 and 2008. By focusing on optical communication components and LED industries, the city aims to be among the world¡¯s top five photonics clusters by 2010.
