Project to build a "Beautiful Gwangju"
  - To build a city filled with woodlands and creeks -
Project to plant 10 million trees

: The city of Gwangju has launched a campaign to plant 10 million trees with the aim of transforming the city, which has deteriorated as a result of rapid urbanization and industrialization, into one that is clean and environment-friendly, where humankind and nature coexist in harmony (2005-2015).
: A citizens tree-planting campaign has been launched to complete the planting of one million trees by 2005 ("plant my own tree campaign").
   
To build five new parks in downtown Gwangju
: To build a park on a plot of land where public organizations' buildings, which have since been relocated, used to stand, to offer respite to citizens in the bustling downtown area (2004-2009, KRW 48.2 billion).
: To build parks and resting places for citizens at the old Police Agency garage, the former Bank of Korea site, the former official residence of the governor of South Jeolla province, the former site of the National Intelligence Service office, and at Woosan Park.
   
To turn the vicinities of Gwangju Stream, Yeongsan River and Hwangryong River into parkland
: To transform Gwangju Stream into a clear and clean free-flowing stream by making drastic improvements to protect its ecology, and to create a nighttime attraction through installation of underwater lighting, etc. (2005-2009, 19.15 km, KRW 60 billion).
: To transform the Yeongsan and Hwangryong rivers into free-flowing ecoparks that offer residents a place of respite (2005-2009, 27.7 km, KRW 35 billion).

Project to build a "Beautiful Gwangju"
To develop attractive nighttime views
: To build a reputation for attractive night scenery from the perspective of urban design, eight areas, including Geumnam-no (Road) and Gwangju Stream, have been earmarked for the creation of nighttime displays (2004-2009, 21 unit projects in 8 areas, KRW 17.1 billion).
: Lighting installation has been recommended for new buildings and major facilities with superior views, a consultative body from the private sector organized, and measures sought to restore nighttime views.
   
To build an "exemplary district with a clean landscape"
: To help Gwangju mature into a beautiful city with clean and attractive streets and buildings, an "exemplary district" has been designated that includes Geumnam-no (Road) and the Street of Art (2005-2009, KRW 3 billion annually).
: A Beautiful Gwangju T/F team has been formed with members from the private, government and research sectors, to establish and implement landscaping plans. : Campaign to erect "small but sophisticated" signboards, helping create streetscapes that are aesthetically pleasing to pedestrians, and other pilot projects were launched.
   
To achieve a city with stylish architectural design
: To launch a campaign entitled "Gwangju, city of architectural design" to develop a city with classy architectural designs, and to build an urban architectural landmark of global renown by offering international prizes for the design of public buildings.
: To give out architectural awards for outstanding buildings, to relaunch the "consultative committee on architectural designs" to encourage the construction of stylish buildings, and to encourage citizens to volunteer their efforts for bettering the city's image.
