Fostering the five new technology application industries
FTTH (Fiber To The Home) project
: To perform role as a "leading city of next-generation information communications" through implementation of FTTH on a trial basis, thus becoming the first city in Korea with such a service (2005-2009, KRW 119.4 billion).
: To bolster the competitiveness of optical Internet equipment and components and to boost the development of relevant sectors by building an optical Internet information and communications network capable of handling 200,000 subscribers.
: To promote the technological development of digital content and generate demand for it, as well as to make dramatic improvements in residents' living environment and the quality of communications in the city by providing services via optical Internet lines.
LED (Light-Emitting Diodes) project
: To advance Gwangju into a global production base for the semiconductor LED industry, whose global market is rapidly expanding, with enormous growth potential in the future (2005-2008, KRW 123.9 billion).
: To build a semiconductor LED cluster inside a high-tech complex where photonics industry infrastructure has been secured, to promote the development of world-class technology, and to foster companies.
BIT (Bio Information Technology) merger project
: To secure the foundation for future-oriented industry by nurturing the next-generation "bio information" industry, which merges biotechnology with information technology (IT) (2004-2009, KRW 30.5 billion).
: To develop advanced medical equipment using talented local experts in the medical, pharmaceutical and information sectors, and to lay the foundation for next-generation "merger" technology such as optical sensors and bio chips.
Nano cluster project
: To elevate standards of regional industry by fostering nanotechnology, which is the linchpin and source technology for the next-generation, high-tech science industry (2004-2009, KRW 78.3 billion).
: To form a nanotechnology integration center in the field of processing and equipment, centered on the Gwangju regional office of the Korea Institute of Industrial Technology, to secure a competitive edge in technology and help capture the market.
Precision molding industry
: To maximize the forward and backward linkage effects among Gwangju's leading industries of automobiles, electronics and photonics, by fostering the molding industry at its source (2004-2006, KRW 11.3 billion).
: To render comprehensive support for the development of precision molding technology, the establishment of pilot production plants, and fostering of professional manpower and marketing activities to promote the integration of relevant companies and grow into a world-class molding complex.

Establishment and operation of a convention center
: Following the inauguration of the Kim Dae Jung Convention Center (Sept. 2005), the convention industry has taken a forward leap and industrial marketing has been similarly ramped up (2003-2009, KRW 77.1 billion).
: Through proactive efforts to attract international-level exhibitions and conferences, convention industry professionals are being nurtured and a cooperative network within and outside of Korea is being established.
Establishment and operation of Gwangju Design Center
: The Gwangju Design Center, the key infrastructure for the design industry and the platform for the industry's development, was established (2002-2005, KRW 49.2 billion).
: An innovative design-industry cluster has been established, along with equipment for technological development of design and their joint use, manpower development, business incubation and information services.
Establishment and operation of Research Center for High-Tech Components and Materials
: Through the establishment of a pilot plant for high-tech components and materials, the city's technological development and commercialization capacity has been reinforced (2004-2006, KRW 18.6 billion).
: This will lay the foundation for greater technological prowess in Gwangju's three major industries - automobiles, electronics and photonics - as well as production technology for new industries.
Establishment and operation of photonics research institute
: The Optical Communication Component R&D Center of the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) was established to develop optical communication technology and to support research through linkages with the photonics industry (2002-2004, KRW 12.9 billion).
: Objective is to support the technology of relevant companies, including the development of core optical Internet technology, to support product development of optical communications companies, and to speed up business incubation.
Establishment and operation of Exchange & Cooperation Center on Science and Technology
: To expand the infrastructure for science and technology exchange among the industrial and academic sectors to foster the high-tech science industrial complex into the hub of research and development in Korea's southwest region (2004-2008, KRW 22.2 billion).
: To support research and development and establish the foundation for promoting science and technology through establishment the arena for active exchange among scientists from Korea and overseas.
Establishment of Research Center on Science and Technology Application
: To operate a research center to industrialize the outstanding research capacity of the Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology and to retain outstanding scientists (2005-2014, KRW 48 billion).
: To enable sustainable development of essential original technology through systematic research on specialized local industries, and to contribute to strengthened industrial competitiveness through reinforced intellectual property rights.
Establishment of Digital Convergence Center
: Establishment and operation of a Digital Convergence Center to heighten the competitiveness of household appliance industry in the region (2004-2008, KRW 31.4 billion).
: To provide the arena for research and education, to support the development of technology-intensive electronic components by small- and medium-sized companies, to build equipment for joint use among companies, to render support in solving problems in technology, and to foster professional manpower.

To foster the hub of science and technology through an "R&D Special District"
Designation and promotion of "Gwangju R&D Special District"
: To designate an "R&D Special District" in the three important inland cities of Gwangju, Daejeon and Daegu, and to promote regional innovation and national industrial competitiveness through competition and cooperation.
: To designate the science-and-industrial complex where universities, research institutes, high-tech companies and agencies supporting such institutes are located as the "R&D Special District," and to advance the region into a center of science and technology in the southwest of Korea.
: To intensify investment in key research institutions including the Gwangju Techno Park, Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute, Korea Institute of Industrial Technology, Korea Photonics Technology Institute, and Advanced Photonics Research Institute, to develop Gwangju into a science and technology hub.
