The establishment of May 18 national anniversary gave a historically significant meaning formally to cherish the valuable spirits of democratic uprising which took place in Gwangju and Jeonnam area in May, 1980, not being confined to a local issue but being extended to a national event.
This result was made by the consequent dedication of Gwangju citizens, members of May 18 citizen union, and democracy activists and it lead to the announcement of ¡¸May 18 Democratic Uprising Anniversary¡¹in May 9, 1997.
Consequently May 18 Democratic Uprising which had been distorted as a riot and rebellion was refined its value as the foundation of democracy in Korea. Therefore the ceremony of May 18 anniversary could be held in all the notional area as well as in Gwangju to promote the nationalization of the spirit of May 18.

Every year various events such as cultural, academic and memorial events have been held at the May 18 Cemetery as well as in the city to memorize the Gwangju May 18 Democratic Uprising at around May 18.
The unique events like cultural exhibitions and a pilgrimage to a historic place in Gwangju help people to remind of the spirits of May 18 in 1980 and not to repeat historic tragedy like May 18 in this country.
Since May 18 was announced as a national anniversary in May 18, 1997 the 17th anniversary, a first formal ceremony, was held under the supervision of a self-administration department and the 18th anniversary was held by the 'People's Government' which started with the first peaceful takeover of governing power in 50 years. The 19th anniversary was taken place in May 18 cemetery with the presence of many significant government officers.
