Topography
The city is surrounded by mountains, and a river flows through the city. Gwangju takes the form of a basin with Mt. Mudeung, Mt. Yangrim, Mt. Seongeo and Jangwonbong surrounding the city to the east. The west side of the city is relatively level with low hills and is connected to the Jeolla Plains. Originating in the valleys of Mt. Mudeung, Gwangju Stream runs through the city to the northwest and merges with the Geukrak River and Seokkok Stream before flowing into the Yeonggsan River.
